First reunion of the "Descendants of Mac Sweeney Doe", Friday, Aug. 25, 2000.

Maolmhuire/ Sir Myles Mac Sweeney, Chief of Doe, 1596 -1630, was being taken to Dublin to be tried for treason when he escaped from captivity aboard an English ship near Derry (August 1600) and leaped into the Foyle.  He swam  ashore in stormy weather and rejoined the forces of Red Hugh O Donnell "before any man or boat sent after could overtake him".
Derricke's portrait, published 1581, showing a Mac Sweeney Chief in Donegal preparing to go on a raid.  The Chief is believed to be Eoghan Óg Mac Sweeney, Chief of Doe, 1570 - 1596.
Eoghan Óg succeeded his brother Murchadh Mall (slain 1570), as Chief of Doe.
Eoghan Óg died, Jan. 26, 1596 and was succeeded by his nephew Maolmhuire/ Sir Myles - a son of Murchadh Mall.
The Chieftaincy always remained in the same family - hence the term "Chiefly family of Doe".
