Event 2008: Remembering Cathbar O Donnell and Cuchonacht Maguire.
Recalling the 400th anniversary of the death in Rome of Cathbar O Donnell and the death in Geneva, Italy, of Cuchonacht Maguire.
4.00 pm, September 7, 2008. Descendants of Mac Sweeney Doe and friends will gather at Doe Castle and place a wreath on the graves of the Mac Sweeney Chiefly families of Doe and recall the 400th anniversary of the death in Rome, Sept 17, 1608, of Cathbar O Donnell (brother to Red Hugh and Rory) whose sister, Mary, married Maolmhuire/ Sir Myles Mac Sweeney, Chief of Doe, 1596-1630. Also, the death in Geneva, Italy, 12 Aug, 1608, of Cuchonacht Óg Maguire (The Maguire of Fermanagh) who brought the Flight of the Earls ship to Rathmullan, Sept 1607.
Cathbar O Donnell's obituary in AFM/ Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland, year 1608, records:
'Cathbar, son of Hugh, son of Manus (O Donnell), the most distinguished and famous for magnanimity and heroism, and for entertainments and hospitality, of any lord's son in the island of Heremon (Ireland); the regeneration of Cuan, son of Cailchin (a lord of Fermoy who lived in the 7th century), and of Guaire, son of Colman (a king of Connnaught in the 7th century) in generosity and hospitality, a man from whom no person ever returned with a refusal, died in Rome on the 17th of September, and was buried along with his brother the earl.'
Cuchonacht Óg Maguire's obituary in AFM /Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland, year 1608, records:
'Maguire, i.e. Cuchonacht Oge, son of Cuchonacht Oge, son of Cuchonacht, son of Cuchonacht, son of Bryan, son of Philip, son of Thomas, lord of Fermanagh, a person who obtained a lordship without fraud, without deception, without treachery or without the slaying of a relative, but was elected in the presence of the men of Ulster, as successor to his brother Hugh; a learned, well-featured, cheerful, high-spirited, and rapid-marching warrior; a man of superior wisdom and personal figure, and of all other good qualifications, died at Geneva, Italy, on the 12th of August.'
Irish and European music of the period will be performed in Doe Castle on September 7, by the guitarist, Dr Eamon Sweeney, a descendant of Mac Sweeney Doe and member of the Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama Early Music Ensemble. He will play Irish music known in Ireland when the Earls left in 1607 and music of the period that they would have heard on their journey through Europe to Rome. The music has been recorded on a CD 'Flow My Tears: Musical Journeys with the Flight of the Earls' launched in 2007 by the Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama to mark the 400th anniversary of the Flight. Music recorded on the CD was performed by the Dublin Institute of Technology Ensemble in the Irish College, Louvain, May 2007, the 400th anniversary of the founding of the College. The Ensemble will also perform music from the CD in the Irish College, Rome, Hallowe'en 2008.
